A. i M. (2.10.2022)
M.: I think nudity is naturalness, freedom, showing yourself in a form that’s… on one hand very basic, primal, but also one in which relatively few people usually see us. Unless you’re someone like Emily Ratajkowski and everyone’s already seen you naked. But if you’re an ordinary person, it’s a state in which very few people in the world will see you, so it’s something very intimate. Nudity is also a kind of reset state for me. Sometimes we’ve had a hard day, we’re home from work, we’ve been through a lot, and taking all of that off, getting in the shower, moving into a state of nudity is a transfer to factory settings – a recharge.
A.: I’ll repeat what was said about naturalness. For me nudity is also very much connected to self-acceptance. It’s very intimate, very yours – you’re simply you and nothing more, nothing defines you, you have no attributes on you like clothes, which in some way influence how we perceive each other.
How has your relationship with your body and nudity evolved over the years?
A.: In my family home nudity wasn’t a taboo topic. Maybe it wasn’t talked about very openly, but I never felt awkward around my parents. Apparently when I was little my dad walked out of the bathroom completely naked in front of me, and I don’t even remember it. Nobody made any big deal of it. I danced for 9 years of my life and I think that also allowed me to build a closer relationship with the body as such – not as a sexual object, but as a means of expressing emotions. On top of that, when you have 5 minutes to change and jump into a costume for a different dance, nobody pays attention to whether a buttock or a bit of breast is showing. It becomes very natural. You can’t shame me with my body.
I didn’t get here straight away – it was more of a journey. I’ve heard various things said about me more than once: that I’m a skeleton, that my bones stick out at the shoulders, that I should eat something. It doesn’t make an impression on me now. I think posing nude also plays a part in that. A kind of “dot on the i” in accepting myself as I am. It actually turns out I feel more comfortable posing naked than in clothes. Even M. recently admitted that himself – that I’m somehow more me, rather than the clothes or whatever.
Was there a specific experience that helped you come to like your ankles, or did it happen naturally?
A.: It was more my attitude, which changed over time, rather than any event. At some point I understood that this is simply me. With these ankles, this slim body, these big eyes. And all of it together makes up my originality, my uniqueness. I came to like myself, including those ankles! They’re mine! I’m not giving them to anyone! ;) Getting to know M. allowed me to immerse myself in that even more, to feel even freer. Which might be evidenced by the fact that when we met, I usually slept in some t-shirt or something…
M.: Nazwijmy to brutalnie – „podomce”.
A.: Nieprawda! To nie była żadna podomka. No nic.
M.: Let’s call it brutally – a “housecoat.”
A.: That’s not true! It was not a housecoat. Anyway. I slept in something. And when I met M., who sleeps naked, it somehow just happened that I started sleeping naked too, and now I genuinely can’t imagine sleeping in anything.
M.: That’s actually an interesting story – once I went to bed not naked and A. asked if I was upset with her.
A.: That’s exactly what happened.
A Ty?
And you?
M.: My story is pretty short. Nudity was always completely natural to me, never any kind of big deal. On top of that, I think I have a certain luck in that I entered adulthood with this status of liking my body as it is. I know it’s not perfect or model-like, but it’s great for me, because it gives me what I need, it helps rather than hinders me in life, it’s simply O.K. So my body was always enough for me, and I’ve always promoted – including through my photography projects – acceptance of your body. Not giving a damn about trying to make it perfect and not giving a damn about comparing yourself to others. I think a lot of people struggle with that and want to look like someone else – but honestly, why? Originality is the most amazing thing in a person and in how they look.
Dzięki fotografii pozwalam sobie poznać inne podejścia do świata.
The only physical metamorphosis I went through was a cognitive one. The sessions I’ve done with women are for me a bit of a history of learning how others treat their bodies, but also a history of shedding clichés I’d been living with. I used to think, for example, that women pose better clothed than without, because it’s a comfort zone. And that’s probably usually true, but I once had a session with a girl who posed in clothes for ¾ of the time and at the end we started taking topless photos. Her eyes started to light up, her face completely changed, she became super confident even though her body wasn’t what the world considers ideal. It was very eye-opening for me to see with my own eyes that for her the situation of being undressed was more comfortable. Photography allows me to discover different approaches to the world.
A.: Can I ask you a question too? Has the number of nude sessions you’ve done influenced the way you perceive a body as a body, rather than sexualizing it?
M.: I think during a shoot a body is never sexual to me. Taking photos is a process where I’m constantly thinking about how to capture what I see in front of me so that it looks good, unconventional, technically correct. I look at it with the curiosity of an observer, without activating the “desire” box in my head at all. On the other hand, I sometimes laugh that when retouching photos I’ll be working on some detail of a body at such close range and for so long that nobody – not even the subject herself – has ever spent that much time looking at that particular part of themselves. Do I perceive bodies differently? I don’t think so – I still look with fascination and appreciate their beauty, just in the appropriate circumstances.
What do you think most strongly determines people’s attitude towards nudity?
M.: People often think in schemas, in rules from their upbringing, or go by the principle: “that’s how it was done and that’s the tradition.” They follow the crowd because it’s safer. They don’t think critically. If we’re educated that nudity is something “bad,” something to hide from, most of us don’t ask ourselves why that attitude exists, whether it could be different. They accept it and don’t dig into it. Sometimes they’re afraid of their own bodies, of other people’s opinions…
A.: Wstydzą i niestety porównują…
Prawdopodobnie. Chociaż kto wie?
A.: They’re ashamed and unfortunately they compare themselves…
M.: People say social media promotes the wrong approach by showing ideal people, but I think it’s not the platforms or magazine covers that are the culprits – it’s more the human tendency to compare. That’s logical, because we don’t want to be outside the herd, we like being accepted, it increases our sense of self-worth. But on the other hand, if you follow the herd you become like everyone else, you don’t have your own opinion, you strive towards others, you want to be like them and you chase something you don’t actually need to have. Because this is my body and it’s not going to be like Brad Pitt’s body. Probably. Although who knows?
A Twoim zdaniem?
And what do you think?
A.: M. has already said a lot. Conformism. Tradition also plays a big role, habit, the fact that we were taught that way. That’s how it is with everything. Stepping outside social frameworks usually comes with judgment, which we’re most often afraid of. To stay in the “herd” we often align ourselves with what’s most common and popular. Difference always stirs emotions – not necessarily positive ones.
Nas o to nie pytaj.
M.: To są znowu te reguły społeczne. Wszyscy wiedzą, że na plaży możesz…
A.: Tak, a poza nie możesz…
Don’t ask us that one.
M.: Those are the social rules again. Everyone knows that at the beach you can…
A.: Yes, but outside of that you can’t…
No dobra, konformizm konformizmem, a reguły regułami.
OK, conformism aside, rules aside. You both grew up in the same country with “bad” nudity and somehow ended up with a different approach.
M.: I’m simply someone who often asks myself: “why? what for?” and tries to go against the current. Though not always. I followed my interests, what was interesting for me to photograph, and through that I created a kind of bubble of people around me who probably keep me in the state where this is O.K. – so I’m also behaving a bit conformistically. I have a bubble that doesn’t judge me, but I had to create it. Because earlier on I wasn’t moving in circles where photographing nudity would be natural at all.
Sometimes I meet someone outside that bubble and get hit with: “mate, are you sleeping with these girls at shoots when they’re naked?” Do I also want everything to be stripped completely bare, completely literal? No, because covering something up heightens curiosity, it can be more exciting precisely because it’s hidden. But I do think that making nudity into something extraordinary is unnatural, when you think about it more deeply. Though I also understand the argument of those who believe nudity is something incredibly intimate and want to share their body only with selected people.
A.: That’s also an interesting thread, because girls who pose are often in relationships with people outside that bubble. When I started posing I also got those kinds of questions and accusations – “how can you show yourself to other people like that? That should be reserved for your man.”
M.: Right, but I think that other person – the one outside the bubble – also doesn’t want others judging them for the fact that their girlfriend undresses for photos, and so on.
A.: And what do you think is harder – being the girlfriend of a photographer who photographs naked women, or being the man of a woman who poses naked?
M.: Both are probably difficult. There’s no point comparing or valuing one against the other. I think it’s a matter of trust, acceptance, and supporting the other person. And it’s not just about nudity.
A.: I agree. Conversation also matters enormously. It’s worth talking about how we feel, which is often harder than showing your body. Letting someone into your thoughts – now that’s something!
Do you notice any social trend? Are we moving towards or away from accepting nudity?
A.: It seems to me that socially we’re moving somewhat in the direction of at least talking about the body. There’s definitely a trend towards naturalness when it comes to makeup and being eco-conscious. I realize it’s hard for me to comment on this objectively, since I’m in the bubble myself. My friends don’t undress. I have a friend who knows I do these photos – I show them to her – and a few times she’s written that I somehow give her courage, inspire her, and while she might not have the courage to have someone photograph her, she’s trying to take a photo of herself naked. It’s wonderful to observe that kind of transformation. And I give her a big hello right here! :D
M.: That thing with photos is interesting in itself, because it was another assumption I went into my project with – that nobody would want to undress for me for photos, let alone publish the results. And the further in I got, the more it turned out that most women actually dream of a session like that, they just either don’t believe in themselves because their body isn’t perfect, or they have no experience and think why would they try playing at being a model, or they’re scared of what their husband, family, friends will say, and so on. I think nudity is becoming more and more present in our society. Except it’s not the kind of nudity we’re talking about here – it’s more the sexual kind. And the more there is of something in society, the more it gets old and boring, and the pendulum might swing the other way. I don’t get the sense though that it’s going on a societal scale and that people are increasingly accepting naturism, for example. But since we’re talking about trends – over the last year there’s been a noticeable move away from bras. There are huge numbers of women under 30 who don’t wear them, and I think that’s the effect of a small cultural revolution – women asserting their independence, feminism.
I wonder whether that’s just a momentary fashion statement.
M.: Of course, it might be.
A.: In large part probably yes. Especially since it’s often young girls carried on the wave of women’s liberation, which is talked about a lot right now.
M.: I think every generation has its own mindset, and the one younger than me accepts differences between people much more readily. But nudity? I’m not sure. There’s more nudity in the public space, but I don’t think it’s really affecting how the majority thinks.
Because it’s not coming through in that natural sense – more in a commercialized and sexual one.
M.: Yes. Something like a forbidden fruit. And this project isn’t about the forbidden fruit at all – it’s about showing ourselves as we are, and showing that walking around naked isn’t something extraordinary. I understand the project isn’t appealing: “let’s all walk naked down the streets!” – but rather it’s showing that if someone wants to be naked, feels good with themselves, and finds it relaxing, they have the right to that, it’s normal, and we encourage people to allow themselves that freedom – alone, but also among people who accept it.
A.: It seems like it’s a very individual matter and all the people involved should consent. Does the fact that someone is a naturist or poses nude in any degree change that person’s worth? Not at all.
M.: I don’t think you can change one person’s mind just like that – but there can be a social trend…
A.: It’s more of a process.
M.: …and a project like this also contributes to change.
A.: Tak! Tam dopiero bielizna narzuca kontekst erotyczny/seksualny.
A.: And I think your (M.’s) photos can also contribute to shifting perspectives. They’re warm, delicate, they show a subtlety and a completely different side of nudity. It’s not vulgar or over-sexualized. I once met a girl who only poses in lingerie and a conversation came up about why not naked? “Because naked is already too provocative…” she said. Unfortunately, posing in that lingerie more than once…
M.: …can often be more sexualized than being naked.
A.: Yes! There the lingerie is what imposes the erotic/sexual context. The body in itself doesn’t carry that meaning. It carries whatever meaning we give it ourselves.
You’re both strongly connected to photography. Tell me, A., how did you come to start posing nude, and then you, M., how did the nude come to appear as a more frequent and primary direction for you? And do you remember your first experiences – being naked in front of a lens, and photographing the first naked woman?
A.: It actually happened quite soon after I started my journey with posing in general. At one photography event a female photographer came up to me who had experience with nudes. She proposed I take part in realizing one of her ideas. Obviously it was a nude. Knowing her style and work, I agreed. I felt very safe working with her.
I jak przyszło co do czego?
A.: Bardzo miło to wspominam.
And when it came down to it?
A.: I remember it very fondly. It was at a photography event where there were quite a few more participants. At first I was a little self-conscious, because in various places around us other people were working on their own projects. The girls also tried to ensure I had maximum comfort. I approached it a bit like a task. I felt we were making something good. I wasn’t wrong – the photos are great! After that event I didn’t immediately move into nude posing. More like covered nudity. It was a process. Before posing I would also often take photos of myself and my body. It was some form of self-expression.
M.: For me it was more step by step. At first I didn’t photograph people at all, then I started. Then I tried sensual female sessions, and over time I started coming across bolder girls who themselves suggested doing topless or nude photos, and I slowly developed in that direction. Now with my portfolio it’s certainly easier to reach women interested in that kind of photography, because they simply know what style I represent and what my aesthetic is.
My approach to photographing nudity also evolved gradually. At the very beginning there was some embarrassment on my part, because I didn’t want anyone to think I was just some guy who wanted to look at a naked woman. I wanted to meet people who could inspire me, but also help me develop photographically. And then more courage kept coming, and it was me learning to get girls comfortable with the whole situation – with the fact that they could try something like this. Through my experience and calm I was working to earn trust, and I hope that most of the subjects of my reportages liked those photos and have a memento for the future. Because that’s actually a common motivation – to see in 20 years what that body looked like and to remember what stage of life you were at then.
The photography world also operates a bit by its own rules, and the nudity that appears within it is somewhat different from the nudity that sometimes appears in public spaces. What have been or are your experiences with that “public” nudity of strangers – in saunas, on beaches, and so on – and with exposing your own nudity to others, outside the space and world of photography?
M.: Nudity was never any great sensation for me, but I also never sought out situations to be among people who are naturists or walk around naked. Obviously at a swimming pool it would sometimes happen in changing rooms, but it was never something I thought about or deliberately sought out. But the first – and quite recent – experience was a trip to the Balkans. One of the stops on my trip was a very well-known naturist beach in Montenegro. I decided it would be an interesting experience to visit a beach like that. It was a very popular beach so I knew there’d definitely be people there. And it was an interesting sensation. I’d deliberately read up beforehand on the rules and the idea of naturism, so I approached it more consciously. I went and it was an interesting experience.
I genuinely felt a kind of positive liberation, inner peace, a oneness with nature, and it was also pleasant to be among people who have a similar approach. I have a bit of that naturist mindset, but I never had a real-life pretext to reveal it. As for everyday life – it seems to me that throughout my adult life it’s been normal for me that when you feel like it, you can walk around the house naked and it’s no big deal. I also gave the people who lived with me or around me the sense that this was ordinary and perfectly accepted for me. I think I’m someone who gives others freedom and wants people to feel comfortable around me. I really dislike those first weeks of getting to know someone. I try to get into that mode of ordinariness and directness as quickly as possible, because it means people don’t tense up – they’re honest with each other, not just in words and thoughts but also somehow physically.
A.: I’ve actually never been to a naturist beach. As a teenager I’d sometimes swim in a lake naked on a dare. It was always a wonderful experience – a little forbidden and liberating. It was really only posing that made my contact with nudity more frequent. And it’s completely natural.
M.: Ja mam jeszcze taką ciekawą historię, bo kiedyś sobie wymyśliłem, że przejadę rowerem Polskę dookoła i przejechałem, i dojechałem nad morze któregoś dnia. Zdjąłem wszystkie ciuchy, poleciałem do morza, wykąpałem się, przepłynąłem parę razy w tę i we w tę, wyszedłem, pusta plaża i zajebiste uczucie takiego połączenia z naturą.
M.: I have another interesting story – I once decided to cycle all the way around Poland, and I did it, and one day I arrived at the sea. I had this secret childhood dream of spending a night in a tent on the beach. I finally found one where there was absolutely nobody. You could even tell from the sand that no one had walked through for several hours – just the wind rippling the sand. I pitched my tent, sorted everything out. I look left, right, sunset – glorious. I took all my clothes off, ran to the sea, swam, went back and forth a few times, got out, empty beach, and that incredible feeling of connection with nature.
Why did you decide to take part in this project?
M.: For one thing, we like doing things together for the first time – I think we’re good at doing things together, and since photography connects us a bit, why not? Something fun, good results, and a memento could come out of it – that’s one side. And on the other, I want to see how you work, because I think our aesthetics – in that indirectness, etherealness, and naturalness – are roughly aligned. So I figured it would be interesting. Until now I’ve only had sessions with women, so this is also interesting and eye-opening. And the last motivation is definitely that it’ll be much easier for me to understand the other side during future sessions if I’ve at least once put myself in that role.
A.: The idea of photos together came up much earlier. Finding someone whose aesthetic matches ours isn’t that simple. And why this project specifically? I think for me it’ll be another stage of opening up. I’ve been photographed in duets with women and men, but those were clothed photos. When you proposed I take part, the desire to do it together with M. appeared in my head almost immediately. I just didn’t know whether he’d want to. He’s on the other side of the camera. As we all now know – he did! I think it’ll be a wonderful adventure for us, a new experience, and a memento.
And how was it?
A.: Some time has passed since our meeting and my impressions haven’t changed. It’s worth noting that throughout the entire session all participants were without clothes. It was very natural, relaxed, at moments funny. Highly recommended!
M.: For me it was an interesting experience that I’d recommend to anyone who feels like it. A wonderful memento, and time spent in an anything-but-ordinary way.
